Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has categorically denied reports circulating online that he is plotting to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a strongly-worded statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti described the claims as false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
According to Ekeoma, the rumor originated from a misinterpretation of Governor Otti’s brief attendance at the birthday celebration of Governor Hope Uzodinma’s twin daughters after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025. He clarified that Otti’s presence at the non-political, family event had no connection whatsoever with any political negotiations or defection plans.
“It is completely devoid of substance and should be disregarded in its entirety,” Ekeoma stated.
Ekeoma further explained that Governor Otti’s rising profile, stellar performance in office, and growing popularity across party lines have naturally attracted attention and political speculations. However, he insisted that any political move Governor Otti would contemplate—especially one with significant implications for the people of Abia State—would always involve consultations with his political allies and the majority of Abians.
He emphasized that Governor Otti remains firmly rooted in the Labour Party and has no discussions ongoing, either formally or informally, with the APC or any other political party regarding defection.
“Governor Otti is fully focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to Abians and believes that less than two years into his administration, it would be unfair and irresponsible to prioritize politics of 2027 over the urgent business of governance,” Ekeoma stressed.
The statement strongly urged the public to ignore the false narratives being peddled by political opponents and mischief-makers bent on distracting the Governor from his mission to transform Abia State.
Ekeoma concluded by reaffirming Governor Otti’s loyalty to the Labour Party and his commitment to fulfilling his promises to the Abia people.
