Isuikwuato, Abia State — Fear and anxiety have gripped residents of Isuikwuato Local Government Area following a fresh wave of insecurity that has claimed the life of a security operative and disrupted ongoing development projects.
The shocking incident, which took place in Nunya community, involved an alleged attempt by unidentified gunmen to kidnap workers of the construction firm handling the Nunya-Eluama-Ogboro road project. The attackers, believed to be armed criminals, opened fire, killing a security personnel assigned to the firm.
Raising the matter on the floor of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Lucky Udoka Nweke Johnson, Member representing Isuikwuato State Constituency, expressed deep concern over the resurgence of criminal activities in the area.
He said:
“This is a matter of grave importance deserving our collective attention as lawmakers. The alarming rise in insecurity poses real threats to lives, livelihoods, and ongoing development efforts in our communities.”
Hon. Johnson commended the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, for his prompt response to security concerns across the state, as well as the state’s security architecture for their continued efforts. However, he emphasized that more proactive steps must be taken to safeguard communities like Isuikwuato.
He publicly extended condolences to the family of the fallen security operative and the Nigerian Army, describing the victim as a “gallant personnel who paid the ultimate price in service.”
“Ndi Isuikwuato collectively regret this unfortunate development and curse the perpetrators for this inglorious act,” he added.
The lawmaker submitted several urgent recommendations to mitigate the situation, including:
Community-Security Collaboration: Enhanced cooperation between local communities and security agencies through intelligence sharing and joint operations.
Empowerment of Local Vigilantes: Strengthening community-led security initiatives via the Isuikwuato Development Union (IDU).
Tech-Driven Surveillance: Deployment of solar-powered surveillance cameras in strategic locations to deter criminal activities.
Border Task Force: Creation of a joint inter-state task force between Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi States to combat cross-border crimes often exploited by criminal gangs.
Support for Government Projects: Emphasized the need to protect and secure all developmental projects under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
Hon. Johnson concluded by reiterating the readiness of the people of Isuikwuato to support all government and security efforts to restore peace and maintain law and order.
“Without adequate security, the monumental development strides of this administration are at grave risk,” he warned.
The Honourable Speaker and Members of the Assembly have pledged to give the matter the attention it deserves as efforts to restore calm in Isuikwuato intensify.
