Tinubu Govt Shuts 13.5m Social Media Accounts, Tightens Online Rules — Jungle Journalist Media Limited

The Federal Government has shut down over 13.5 million social media accounts in Nigeria for offensive content and breaches of the Code of Practice 2024. The affected platforms include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter).

According to Jungle-Journalist.Com, the disclosure was made in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted by Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and other service providers, highlighting enforcement of content moderation in Nigeria.

The report shows that platforms removed 58.9 million offensive contents, received 754,629 complaints, and reinstated 420,439 contents after appeals.

The Code of Practice, jointly issued by the NCC, NITDA, and NBC, mandates platforms to register in Nigeria, comply with local laws, pay taxes, and safeguard users from harmful online content.

NITDA’s spokesperson, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, said the move demonstrates progress but stressed the need for stronger collaboration among regulators, tech firms, and civil society to boost user safety and digital literacy.
