Abuja, Nigeria — Members of the Abia State Labour Party (LP) Caucus in the House of Representatives have issued a stern warning to the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, accusing him of arrogance, divisive politics, and deliberate attempts to undermine Governor Alex Chioma Otti (OFR).
In a strongly worded press statement, the LP lawmakers expressed “deep dismay” over what they described as Kalu’s “unguarded and unhealthy utterances” that have continually threatened political harmony in Abia State.
The lawmakers recalled that shortly after his emergence as Deputy Speaker, Kalu boasted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would “capture Abia” in 2027, flaunting his federal ranking as “number six” in the national hierarchy as though power was his personal inheritance.
“Such careless talk, repeated after assuming the exalted office of Deputy Speaker, was unintelligent, insensitive, and unbecoming of a public officer who should embody humility and emotional intelligence,” the caucus stated.
According to the Abia LP Caucus, Kalu’s utterances and conduct are a deliberate strategy to incite the Federal Government and ruling APC against Governor Alex Otti’s administration, while spreading falsehood to discredit the Labour Party government in Abia.
They alleged that Kalu’s divisive politics were not new, recalling his history of similar conflicts with key figures in his own party in the South East.
“His recent actions are not about service; they are about personal ambition and power-drunk tendencies, even at the expense of peace in Abia State,” the statement continued.
The lawmakers also emphasized that Governor Alex Otti has shown maturity and respect toward both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Deputy Speaker, maintaining cordial relationships despite political differences.
They reminded Kalu that Otti even directed all Labour Party House members to support his emergence as Deputy Speaker, and later hosted a grand state reception in his honor — a gesture they say should have been reciprocated with respect and cooperation.
“Governor Otti has demonstrated political maturity and magnanimity. Instead of repaying goodwill with arrogance, Hon. Kalu should learn the humility and respect expected of Igbo leaders,” they said.
The caucus also highlighted Otti’s leadership strides in partnership with the Federal Government, listing key ongoing projects such as the Port Harcourt Road in Aba, Ohafia-Arochukwu Road, Omenuko Bridge, and the 25km Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road soon to be flagged off.
They urged Benjamin Kalu to use his “number six” position to attract more projects and support Abia’s development, rather than engage in “cheap politics and divisive rhetoric.”
“If the massive public endorsement of Governor Otti’s achievements unsettles Hon. Kalu, that is no reason for mischief or incitement,” the statement cautioned.
“If he continues on this path, he may find himself at odds with Ndi Abia.”
The caucus called on Abians across all divides — youth, elders, traders, professionals, and political stakeholders — to stand united behind Governor Alex Otti’s transformational agenda and reject attempts by any individual to drag the state backward.
“Ultimately, power belongs to God Almighty,” they concluded.
