Commonwealth Games: Ex-International Chides Boxing Federation over exclusion of some categories of boxing

Sports Ambassador, and Ex-International Boxer, Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, has challenged the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) to explain why Men’s 60kg Lightweight and +92kg Super Heavyweight classes were deleted from the just concluded National Commonwealth Games trial (March 1-6, 2026).

In a statement, Mazi Okoronkwo named the seven approved weight categories for the Games, for both Men and women which align with the LA28 Olympic classes to include:
Men: 51kg, 57kg, 63.5kg, 71kg, 80kg, 92kg, +92kg.
Women: 50kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 66kg, 75kg, +75kg.

According to him, reference World Boxing Classes include minimumweight, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight.

He argued that these
categories are designed to provide clear, consistent competition, with events ranging from flyweight to heavyweight.

The Ex-International pointed out that NBF’s omission of 60kg (men) and +92kg (men) classes raises concerns and demands explanation from the NBF and National Sports Commission officials.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature 14 boxing events (seven for men, seven for women) to ensure gender parity.
