As part of efforts in acquainting Abia’s students and children with their rights, and to understand when their rights are being violated, the National Human Rights Commission Abia State, Greater Women Initiative for Health and Rights in including the Network of People Living with Hiv/AIDS in Nigeria Abia and Victorian Clarion Foundation have embarked on enlightenment advocacy to students in the state.

Speaking at the sensitisation program aimed at educating students on their fundamental rights, the facilitators and Assistant Director of Investigation in the National Human Rights Commission, Abia State, Mrs Ukachi Uka, described such engagement as imperative, as it will enhance the students’ boldness to speak out when their rights are being violated.
She extolled the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS Abia State, Greater Women Initiative, and Victorian Clarion Foundation for partnering the commission in enlightening the students about, human rights, referred to as basic rights and freedoms to which all human beings are entitled to as well as existing child rights laws.
Mrs Uka enumerated rights of the child to include, right to survive and development, right to education, right to health among others, while legal instruments for the protection of the child rights include, CRA, CRL 2004, CFRN 1999 as amended amongst others.


Also speaking a Senior State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice Ezetah Agbogo, pointed out that the sensitisation and advocacy program will enable the students to know their rights and report rights violations, to the relevant authorities.
In his remarks the principal of Mayfair secondary school World Bank Housing Estate Umuahia Mr Timothy Nwachukwu thanked advocacy team including National Human Rights Commission Abia’, NEPWHAN Abia’ state, Greater Women initiative for Health and Rights , GWIHR, SHRE, VICLAF and ministry of justice and for the sensitization advocacy which according to him has enlightened the students and young ones, on what is their rights and the need to report to the authorities when their rights are being violated
