Abia FIRST LADY, PRISCILLA OTTI, SHOWCASES AKWETE FABRIC AT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

At the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York — during the Black History & Lifestyle Awards — Abia State First Lady Priscilla Otti showcased the celebrated Akwete fabric, spotlighting the weaving heritage of the Ndoki women.
In her remarks, Mrs. Otti emphasized that Akwete is far more than a textile — it embodies history, heritage, and women’s empowerment. She drew attention to the women of Ukwa East (Abia) who, through generations, have preserved this matrilineal weaving tradition.

Mrs. Otti urged support for Nigeria’s local textile industry, cultural diplomacy, and the economic prospects of African artisans.
Her presentation on the global stage reinforced Abia’s role as the guardian of one of Africa’s most iconic indigenous fabrics.
