Deputy Speaker Kalu Donates Books to Faculty Of Law, University of Calabar

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has fulfilled his promise to the University of Calabar by donating academic textbooks and Law Reports to the Library of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar.

The donation is in fulfillment of the promise made by the Deputy Speaker when the Management of the Institution, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi, visited him in his office in Abuja to invite him to be the 50th Anniversary and 37th Convocation Lecturer of the Institution.

During the visit, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Mike Otu, had informed the Deputy Speaker that the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar was in dire need of Academic Textbooks and Law Reports to beef up its library and fulfill accreditation requirements.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Sam Hart, Kalu handed over the books to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi in the presence of Deputy Vice Chancellors, Management of the University, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Mike Otu and other staff of the Institution.

In his speech at the occasion, Kalu noted that he was donating the books to sow into the same soil that nurtured him and to water the roots of legal knowledge and fuel the future of legal scholarship.

According to Kalu:

“For a Faculty like ours, whose legacy of producing jurists, legislators, scholars, and advocates is storied and enduring, investment in educational resources is not optional; it is essential to sustaining excellence and advancing our legacy. Without up-to-date legal texts, without comprehensive law reports, we risk silencing the voices of the future before they even find their words”.

“These materials are not merely pages bound in leather and ink, filled with legal terms and caselaw. They are instruments of transformation, silent mentors that will shape how our students think, reason, argue, and advocate. Within their covers lie the distilled wisdom of centuries of legal thought, the evolving doctrines that guide our courts, and the precedents that frame justicein our society”.

Receiving the books on behalf of the University, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi described Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu as a worthy alumnus of the Institution who has shown in many ways that he values his alma mater.

Professor Banku recalled the scintillating 50th Anniversary and 37th Convocation Lecture delivered by Kalu which placed the Institution on a global pedestal as two months after the lecture, she was still receiving calls from colleagues all over the world to avail them a copy of the lecture.

She charged the Dean of the Faculty of Law to ensure judicious use of the books donated and called on other alumni of the Institution to emulate the Deputy Speaker.

Present at the occasion were classmates of Hon. Kalu from the 1998 graduating set of the Institution and students of the Faculty of Law of the university.
