Edo Deputy Speaker Resigns Amid Shift in Assembly Power Balance

The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs Maria Oligbi Edeko, representing Esan North East II under the Peoples Democratic Party, has voluntarily resigned her position following the shift in power that placed the PDP in the minority.

Edeko, who was elected Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023, stepped down to uphold what she described as the principles of justice, fairness, and equity among constituencies.

“I have chosen to resign my position to allow for justice, fairness and equity for all the constituencies,” she stated in her resignation speech. She expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of the PDP for entrusting her with the responsibility of representing her people in the Assembly.

Colleagues in the House commended Edeko for her dedication, integrity, and significant contributions to the legislative process. Several lawmakers praised her commitment to public service, noting the lasting impact of her leadership.

In the wake of her resignation, Mr Osamwonyi Atu of the All Progressives Congress, representing Orhionmwon East, was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

Following the transition, Majority Leader Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC-Esan West) moved a motion that all entitlements due to the Deputy Speaker’s office be accorded to Edeko in full. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Charity Airobarueghian (PDP-Ovia North East I) and unanimously supported by the House.

The development marks a significant realignment within the Edo State House of Assembly, as the APC strengthens its hold on leadership positions.
