UMUAHIA, Nigeria – May 20, 2025Governor Alex Chioma Otti of Abia State has once again signaled his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming the state’s economy — this time through an ambitious mega-project: the Abia Stadium City. The governor revealed this during a high-level meeting with representatives of the Irish Development Group (IDG), led by its Managing Director, Mr. Nigel Neely, at the Government House, Umuahia.

Governor Otti, while receiving the Stadium City master plan from the IDG team, reaffirmed his readiness to partner with serious-minded private investors who share his vision of building a sustainable, world-class sports and entertainment hub.

“We’ve been on this stadium project for a while,” Governor Otti said. “We know what we want to achieve, and we’re only interested in investors who have the capacity and willingness to commit. If it’s largely private-sector held, it guarantees sustainability, even after I’ve left office.”

According to the governor, the state government is looking at maintaining a maximum 10–20% stake in the project, leaving room for investor-led control and innovation. He emphasized that discussions would now move into finer details — funding, ownership structure, and implementation timelines — to actualize the multi-billion-naira initiative.

Strategic Location, Long-Term Vision

The proposed site, located on a 96-hectare expanse in Umuahia, was chosen after extensive studies. Governor Otti highlighted its proximity to the upcoming Abia International Airport as a major advantage.

“We had many options, but this site stood out. It’s accessible, not too far from town, and close to our new airport. Imagine flying in for a match or conference, staying at nearby hotels, shopping, and enjoying world-class entertainment — all in one place,” Otti noted.

He further revealed that his administration is in the process of acquiring the Umuahia ring-fence of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which will ensure uninterrupted power supply for the project and boost the entire Abia North zone.

Stadium City to Redefine Abia’s Identity

The master plan, presented by Mr. Neely, proposes a multi-functional sports and tourism complex that includes:

Mr. Neely described the initiative as “a bold, forward-thinking project” that will position Abia as a premier destination for sports, tourism, and business in Nigeria and beyond. He lauded Governor Otti’s transformative agenda and expressed enthusiasm about IDG’s involvement.

Building a New Abia Through Partnerships

Present at the meeting were top government officials including the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir. Nwaobilor Nwadinma Ananaba, and Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Uwaoma Ukandu, who both expressed optimism that the Stadium City would significantly contribute to job creation, infrastructure growth, and Abia’s global image.
