MOUAU Final year student slumps, dies during football training
The Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, has confirmed the death of Nwachukwu Omiko, a final year student of Mechanical Engineering in the University, whose death occurred this Wednesday, 14 May, 2025 during a football training exercise.
According to a release endorsed by Dr Ubadire Agua, Chief Public Relations Officer of the University, Omiko slumpped in the football pitch and his co-players tried to resuscitate him unsuccessfully before alerting the University Health Services.
The report further revealed that he was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in the University’s oxygen-equipped ambulance in a neck-breaking speed, where he died despite the efforts to keep him alive.
To this end, the Vice-Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, has extended the condolences of the University to the parents and family of Mr. Omiko as well as his colleagues in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.
The University Management however appealed to their students to check their health status with the University Health Services upon arrival on the Campus, and avoid strenuous exercises if they have underlying health challenges.
