Governor of abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has hailed the Supreme Court judgement delivered on April 4, 2025, which nullified the tenure of the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party, describing it as a triumph of the will of the people over the interests of a few.

In a strongly worded reaction, Governor Otti stated that the apex court’s ruling validated the establishment of the Senator Esther Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee, which emerged in Umuahia in 2024 after the expiration of the Abure-led NWC’s tenure. According to the court, the Abure committee had “outlived their tenure,” effectively losing legitimacy.

Supreme Court Vindicates Labour Party Reformists

“I’m not just happy with the judgment,” Governor Otti said, “I celebrate the fact that the highest court in the land has vindicated our position. This sound judgement by the Supreme Court was the foundation for setting up the National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman as Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Secretary.”

He emphasized that the formation of the caretaker committee was guided by the vision to restore peace, unity, and institutional strength within the party, enabling it to build on the momentum of its recent electoral successes.

Rebuilding Labour Party: Otti’s Vision for a Stronger Platform

The Governor affirmed his commitment, along with other stakeholders, to reform and reposition the Labour Party into a more formidable and people-oriented political movement with deep democratic roots. “We will ensure the party is restructured at all levels to deliver on its promise of effective, inclusive governance,” he said.

Governor Otti praised the Supreme Court for its decisive ruling, noting that it resonates with the expectations of true Labour Party faithful and promotes the growth of democracy and rule of law in Nigeria. He acknowledged the patience and loyalty of party members, including the NLC, TUC, and other stakeholders who stood firm during the leadership crisis.

Call for Unity and Reconciliation

The Governor also extended an olive branch to the ousted national officers of the party, urging them to cooperate with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) to move the party forward. “This is a new dawn. We must build an all-inclusive Labour Party, free of discrimination and favoritism,” he said.
