Tension has engulfed Ukwa East Local Government Area following a heated disagreement among some councillors of the Ukwa East Legislative Council, which escalated into chaos, unrest, and acts of violence on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. The incident, which residents described as “disturbing and completely avoidable,” prompted strong condemnation from Prince Okey Kanu, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Leader of the Labour Party in Ukwa East LGA.

In a firm and detailed press statement, Prince Kanu expressed deep concern over the violent outburst, warning that such conduct tarnishes the image of Ukwa East and undermines the values of the Labour Party. He described the destruction of government property, intimidation, and disorderly behaviour as “unacceptable and contrary to the spirit of democracy.”

According to him, disagreements are normal in a parliamentary system, but councillors must uphold maturity, discipline, and restraint. “Debates may be robust, opinions may differ, but violence can never be an option,” he declared.

Prince Kanu reassured the people of Ukwa East that steps are already underway to address the situation. He revealed that the Labour Party leadership in the area, working with relevant authorities, has commenced engagements with all parties involved to uncover the root causes of the crisis and implement lasting solutions.

He appealed for calm across the LGA, urging councillors, party supporters, and residents to avoid inflammatory comments or actions that could worsen tensions. He emphasized that unity, peace, and responsible leadership remain his top priorities.

“Division is an ill wind that blows no one any good,” he cautioned, stressing the need to preserve the collective vision of progress for Ukwa East.

Prince Kanu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening harmony, rebuilding trust, and ensuring that Ukwa East stands as an example of disciplined, responsible, and mature democratic administration.
