It was, indeed, a moment characterized by anxiety, imaginations and expectations. Honestly, it was a ‘long wait’. That was the period between the 2026 Primary Elections of All Progressives Congress, and the eventual uploading of her successful Candidates to the portal of Independent National Electoral Commission, for the purposes of 2027 General Election.
Even though it should have been obvious that the Electoral Officials that the National Working Committee of APC had delegated to conduct the elections in the States had declared the appropriate Aspirants winners in the elections and must have, as it should be, delivered names of such Aspirants to the National Headquarters of the Party in Abuja, uncertainty and anxiety were highly visible.
Under such circumstances, it was not improbable or unlikely that some unscrupulous or unpatriotic Party Officials could have taken undue advantage of the lacuna that appeared to have existed to exploit Aspirants.
In Abia State, with the uploading of the name of Chief Eric Chinemeucheya Opah as the 2027 Governorship Candidate of All Progressives Congress, and subsequent issuance of Nomination Form to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission, every doubt or uncertainty about who the Abia APC Governorship Candidate is has now been cleared.
In a constitutional democracy, once a Candidate emerges, every Aspirant who had aspired to fly the flag of the Party naturally queues in, and every hatchet is buried. This is what it should be, except where the aspiration was driven by desperation.
Now that a quintessential Gentleman, and an intercontinental Shipping and Logistics Magnate, Chief Eric Chinemeucheya Opah, has formally been pronounced as the Governorship Flagbearer of APC in Abia State, all hands should be on deck to make sure the Party wins the election in 2027, and make Abia a better State.
In this regard, it is expected that the Rt Hon Ben Kalu’s Leadership of the Party in Abia State, which has already initiated reconciliation at Abuja, should still do more to guarantee an all round quantifiable success. Kudos should, however, be given to the Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives and Leader of APC in Abia State, Rt Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu, CFR, for the leadership he has, so far, provided. Even at that, Critics should also appreciate that being human, he is not impeccable.
All Leaders of the Party in the State should realize that it smacks of dishonesty and lack of political integrity to go about collecting money from, and ‘striking deals’ with the Labour Party Government in Abia State, with the hope of conspiring against and deceiving APC in the State, especially the Party’s Governorship Candidate. The wall has ears and there will be hardly any selfish plot by some unscrupulous leaders in the Party to bring it down that crtically-minded members of the Party will not hear. Even some Labour Party Government Officials will disclose such mischievous conspiracies to some members of APC in the State. One thing such treacherous leaders in APC in Abia State should not fail to realize is that no saboteur is ever respected even by those that hire his dirty services. They are always treated as political lepers. So, let all work in the overall interest of the Party.
For the umpteenth time, it has to be clearly stated that Chief Eric Chinemeucheya Opah is an urbane character, whose developmental trajectory will impact very positively on all sectors of Abia Economy. He is so polished that whatever rational understanding he has with any person or group of persons will surely be implemented. Above all, Chief Eric Chinemeucheya Opah is fully cosmopolitan by nature, training and exposure. He is neither parochial nor sectional in characterization. He will not discriminate against any person or group of persons, for whatever reason or reasons. He is clean, and carries no infectious baggages.
His acknowledgement of the dynamic contributions of his fellow contestant in the Governorship Primary Election, Chief Henry Ikoh, immediately after receiving his INEC Governorship Nomination Form, and expression of gratitude to the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives and Leader of APC in Abia State were clear indications that Chief Opah is a team player, and a grateful character.
Abians know very well that names have their meanings, and also chart a mystical sense of direction. The name ‘Chinemeucheya’ is not ordinary. It is a nomenclatural compass that will metamorphose into a Better Abia.
Political history and dynamics have taught, over the years, that no Party Primary Election Process has ever been found to be perfect. Therefore, all those who lost in the Party Primary Elections should not resort to extreme bitterness. Politics is a game for the libral-minded. It must not be done with a mindset of ‘do or die, or if it is not me, no person else should be’. Politicians should not be oblivious of the fact that there will always be a tomorrow. That, in essence, suggests that what one does not achieve today could be achieved tomorrow.
The victory of Chief Eric Chinemeucheya Opah at the Abia APC Governorship Primary Election is not his victory alone. It is victory for the entirety of APC in Abia State, and, of course, the whole of Abia State.
