Speaker Enugu Assembly Honours Young Boxing Gold Medalists

The Enugu State Grassroots Talent hunt programme spearheaded by the speaker Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Uche C. Ugwu and coordinated by Ex-International Boxer Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo has continued to yield dividends for the state and the country as discovered talents keep breaking records.

In the latest attainment, two young boxers: Chisom Ani and Victor Egbo, who represented Enugu State in the Abia State South East Amateur Boxing Championship in Umuahia, held from June 23 – 27, 2026 returned with GOLD.

Receiving the Gold medalists led by Mazi Comr. Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, Co-Coordinator of Action Committee on Sports literacy for Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly in Enugu today, the Speaker, Rt Hon Ugwu commended Governor Peter Mbah for leveraging sports to empower youths.

Rt Hon Ugwu who expressed delight that the grassroots boxing talent hunt has gradually changed the face of sporting activities in the State presented cash rewards to the medalists.

He lauded the coordinator who is also the CEO, IKEUJ Boxing Promotions, Mazi Okoronkwo for ensuring that the grassroots efforts through the Action Committee on Sports Literacy yielded the desire results.

Contributing, Hon. Raymond Ugwu, Chairman of the House Committee on Youth, Sports Development and Security Matters, appreciated the House of Assembly’s commitment to grassroots sports.

He expressed joy that the discovery of boxing talents at the grassroots has already produced Gold Medalists for Enugu State, and thanked the Speaker, the Governor, and the Coordinator of the Grassroots Boxing Project as well as Enugu State Boxing Association Deputy Director for the excellent work.

Speaking with Hanto Daily News after the heartwarming reception, Mazi Okoronkwo thanked the speaker of the Assembly for his undying interest in the development of sports, particularly, boxing.

He assured that the programme which has been moving round the 17 local government areas of Enugu State in search of raw boxing talents will continue to make waves with the Unwaivering Support of the speaker and the Chairmen of the local government areas.

He noted that through the project, boxers from the coal city state have represented the state at both national and international tournaments with remarkable impacts.
