As part of efforts to enlighten the young people, especially the students on the need to embrace a career in the marine and blue economy for economic development, a philanthropist and Abia-born author of the book,” Blue Economy: A Gateway to a Sustainable Future Dr Chika Ethel-Chukwudi, has embarked on an awareness visit to schools in the state.
Speaking during the visit to schools in Umuahia North and South local Government Areas including, Ibeku High School junior and Senior Secondary, School road Primary School, known as Smart School, Urban School, Nkwuegwu Secondary School, umukabia Central School, Ohokobe Umuohu Primary School, Okwu Community Primary School Olokoro, Trinity Primary and Secondary School St Charles school among others, Dr Mrs Chukwudi, noted that there is a lot of untapped potential in the blue economy capable of growing the nation’s economy and job opportunities.
Dr Mrs Chukwudi said it has become necessary to let the children know what the blue economy is all about, the need for them to develop an interest in that sector, while choosing their career, to enable the country to adequately harness the resources abundant in the ocean, as it is in other developed nations.
Dr Mrs Chukwudi who used the sensitisation visit to distribute books on the blue economy, written by her to pupils and students, and teachers free of charge, noted that the importance of the blue economy cannot be overemphasised
Dr Mrs Chukwudi who is the head of PR NIMASA Abuja zonal office commended the Governor Dr Alex Otti whose administration has shown a genuine commitment to the development of the state, pointing out that his recent move to develop a seaport in the state, demonstrates his desire to put the state on a higher economic pedestal.

She explained that seventy per cent of the world’s environment is covered by ocean, while over 8 billion world population, three billion people depend on the ocean for their livelihood, explaining that the Federal government had, in 2023 created the Ministry of Marine and blue economy, acknowledging the important role of the sector to the economy.
Responding, some of the head teachers and principals, including the principal of N Kwuegwu Secondary School Mrs Otta Grace, Head. School road primary known as Smart school Mrs Stella Iheanacho, Principal Ibeku High School junior Lady Ada O Ocho and senior counterpart Elder Ekeledimgba among others thanked Dr Mrs Chukwudi for the gesture.
