Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced a bold step to transform businesses and livelihoods across the state with a ₦2 billion support fund for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) under the state’s cooperative support scheme.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Umuahia, Governor Otti explained that the initiative reflects his administration’s vision of building sustainable businesses rather than encouraging a culture of dependency.

He recalled that his government disbursed ₦1 billion to MSMEs last year, stressing that the impact has motivated the expansion of the scheme to empower even more entrepreneurs.

“There is a new culture of handouts, but that’s not our culture. We continue to invest in our people, particularly the youths and business owners, to ensure they can stand on their own and thrive,” Otti said.

Governor Otti noted that youth empowerment remains a cornerstone of his reforms. About 1,000 young people are currently receiving intensive training through the government-funded Talent Hunt and Leadership Training scheme.

In addition, programmes like the Abia Leadership Academy, TechRise, and other talent-promotion initiatives are preparing youths for global opportunities in AI, ICT, and sports.

“We believe that before long, Abians will take up leadership positions globally, thanks to the quality training they are receiving. For those already in business, we are supporting them with loans to expand,” Otti emphasized.

With strategic investments in MSMEs, and youth empowerment, Governor Otti has set Abia State on a path to sustainable growth and prosperity. The ₦2 billion MSME support fund stands out as a game-changer, designed to unlock innovation, expand businesses, and create jobs across the state.
