Abia Health Ministry Sets Up Group to Tackle Climate Change and Health Issues

The Abia State Ministry of Health has established a Technical Working Group (TWG) on Climate Change and Health to address the growing impact of climate change on public health.

The group was inaugurated on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Ministry’s boardroom in Umuahia. The initiative forms part of efforts to develop the Abia State Health Sector Adaptation Plan (AB-HSAP), aimed at strengthening the health system and protecting vulnerable populations from climate-related health risks.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ifeyinwa Blossom Uma-Kalu, expressed appreciation to participants for their commitment and participation. She described the inauguration as a significant step toward improved coordination in addressing climate and health challenges in the state.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in tackling the intersection of climate change and health. He noted that the Technical Working Group will provide expert guidance, promote collaboration, and support evidence-based planning and implementation.

He added that the initiative aligns with the vision of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti to enhance healthcare delivery for the people of Abia State.

The Technical Working Group comprises representatives from various ministries, agencies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners, reflecting the state’s commitment to a multi-sectoral approach.

The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding public health through strong policies and strategic partnerships, in line with national and global climate change efforts.
