The Abia State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community engagement and building public trust through continuous sensitization programmes across the state.
In line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, Danladi Isa, and the Inspector-General of Police’s directive on enhanced community policing, the Command on Tuesday carried out an outreach programme for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Community Development Service (CDS) in Umuahia North.
The sensitization programme was led by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chioma Chinaka, alongside the Command Coordinator of Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), Ekenta Ngozi Blessing.
Corps members from the Editorial and Publicity Group, as well as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) group, participated in the exercise.
Speaking during the programme, DSP Chinaka educated the corps members on the responsibilities of the police beyond arrests, emphasizing the importance of crime reporting, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, respectful conduct during stop-and-search operations, and the role of community policing in maintaining security.
Also speaking, ASP Ekenta sensitized participants on the dangers of cultism, warning signs of cult-related activities, and channels for reporting such incidents. She urged the corps members to shun all forms of social vices and become advocates for peace and lawful conduct within their communities.
The outreach programme featured an interactive session where participants asked questions on policing and security issues, which were clarified by the officers. Emergency contact lines of the Command were also shared with the corps members, who were encouraged to further educate their colleagues on the knowledge gained.
The officers assured the participants of the Command’s readiness to continue collaborating with youths and other stakeholders in promoting safety, security, and peaceful coexistence across the state.
