Critically-Ill Pope Francis Showing ‘Slight Improvement,’ Says Vatican

Pope Francis, hospitalized in serious condition due to pneumonia in both lungs, was exhibiting a “slight improvement,” the Vatican reported on Monday, while warning that physicians would not provide a prognosis.

In light of worldwide worries about the 88-year-old’s health, the Vatican announced in its evening bulletin that “the critical clinical conditions of the Holy Father show slight improvement.”

“Today, there were no instances of asthma attacks; several lab results have shown improvement,” it mentioned, adding that Francis had worked in the afternoon after receiving the Eucharist in the morning.

On Monday night, several hundred devotees gathered with numerous cardinals in St. Peter’s Square to pray the rosary. The prayer for Francis — who has been the head of the Catholic Church since 2013 — was conducted by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state.

Pope Francis was hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to breathing issues, but his health declined, and his bronchitis progressed to double pneumonia.

The Vatican stated that the oxygen provided in recent days was administered on Monday “with slightly lower flows and a reduced percentage of oxygen.”

It warned, nonetheless, that “given the intricacy of the clinical scenario” doctors chose not to “determine the prognosis”.

Francis’s medical team has indicated that the medications he is receiving will require time to produce results, and on Friday they cautioned that he would stay in the hospital for at least this entire week.
