EPL: Referee Anthony Taylor steps down

Premier League referee, Anthony Taylor, has announced his retirement from top flight football.

Taylor is standing down after 16 years, following the conclusion of the World Cup.

The 47-year-old took charge of 831 fixtures in the English, European and international game.

His last game was the 2026 World Cup last-16 clash between Portugal and eventual winners Spain.

Taylor’s statement read: “Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant.

“The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.”
