Governor Otti Projects Abia Culture to Global Stage as Ikeji Aro Festival Targets UNESCO Recognition

Governor Alex Otti’s administration has taken another bold step in redefining Abia State’s image on the global stage by actively supporting the ongoing Ikeji Aro Cultural Festival and pushing for its recognition by UNESCO.
The Abia State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hon. Dr. Math Ekwuribe, reaffirmed this commitment while receiving members of the Ikeji Aro Festival Planning Committee in Umuahia.
Dr. Ekwuribe disclosed that the state government has already begun beautification projects across Abia, including the artistic enhancement of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) fence in Umuahia, executed by in-house artists. He further announced that preparations are underway for the molding of cultural monuments that will stand as symbols of Abia’s heritage.
On the festival, the Commissioner noted:
“The Aro Ikeji Festival is here, and the grand finale will hold on the 26th of September 2025. We are working closely with the National Commission for Monuments and are about to sign an MoU that will revive heritage sites across Abia, such as Ulochukwu Cave in Alayi, Isiuzu Waterfall, Ibom Waterfall, Oloko Magistrate Court, Isuikwuato Waterfall, Umunneochi Cave, Azumili Blue River, Akwaete Beach, Obeaku City Lake, and Amaukwu Ekeobasi in Osisioma.”
The President General of Nzuko Aro, Hon. Sir Nnadozie Udensi, praised Governor Otti and Dr. Ekwuribe for projecting Aro culture to the world. He emphasized that the Ikeji Aro Festival, which spans 19 days, is unique as each kindred showcases its culture, reinforcing Arochukwu’s place in African history.
Adding more depth, Mazi Achilehu Okoroafor, Chairman of the UNESCO Listing Committee, described Ikeji as a spiritual, cultural, and tourism journey that strengthens unity among the Aro people globally. He highlighted significant days such as:
September 20 (Nkwo Nzukoro) – when families celebrate the harvest with new yams.
September 21 (Mponsukoro) – a bustling festival market day filled with masquerade displays.
September 25 (Ibom Isii Day) – featuring wrestling contests and cultural displays where suitors emerge.
September 26 (Akebe Day) – the grand finale, when over 500 Aro communities worldwide converge, with colorful masquerades from Cameroon, Gabon, and beyond, and the revered Eze Aro makes a rare public appearance.
According to him, the Ikeji Festival is more than culture – it is a covenant of thanksgiving, unity, and identity for the Aro people.
With the Otti administration’s proactive engagement, the Ikeji Aro Festival is on its way to becoming a UNESCO-listed cultural heritage, a move that will place Abia State at the forefront of global cultural tourism.
Other delegation members included Mazi Sir Kingsley Chijioke (representing Barr. Oscar Chukwuma Okorie, Chairman of Ikeji Aro Committee), Mazi Oba Nnaemeria (President of Nzuko Aro, Umuahia Branch), Mazi Achilihu Okoroafor (Chairman, Sub-Committee on UNESCO and Culture), Mazi Chinatu Okoro, and Mazi Enyinnaya Okoro.
This development is a clear sign of Governor Otti’s cultural revolution, one that is not only strengthening Abia’s identity but also positioning the state as a global hub for tourism and heritage preservation.
