New Pope : Cardinals enter second day of papal conclave

Following the inability of the Catholic Cardinals to elect a new pontiff in the first day of their meeting, they are today , Thursday (8/5/25), entering the second day of the papal conclave.

Black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday evening after the first vote, which lasted about three hours , signalling that the cardinals meeting in the conclave could not reach a final decision.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have gathered in St Peter’s Square, awaiting the result from the 133 cardinals on whose shoulders this spiritual responsibility lies on.

The Cardinals will have breakfast and attend Mass this morning before returning to deliberations and they are allowed no communication with the outside world until a new pope is elected.
