Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his vow to serve only one term of four years if elected President of Nigeria, describing the pledge as “sacrosanct” and rooted in his belief that purposeful leadership does not require an eternity in office.

 

In a strongly worded statement, Obi drew inspiration from Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, noting that their legacies were defined by impact, not tenure length. He contrasted their examples with the African trend where leaders cling to power, often to the detriment of governance and public trust.

 

Obi acknowledged widespread public scepticism about political promises, citing recent remarks questioning his sincerity and even suggesting psychiatric evaluation for anyone pledging a single term.

 

“They are judging me by their own standards – where political promises are made to be broken. But I am not cut from that cloth,” he stated. “In my political life, my word is my bond.”

 

Referencing his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, Obi said he made measurable promises in education, healthcare, rural infrastructure, and prudent financial management — all of which he fulfilled without deviation.

 

If elected, Obi says his 48-month presidency would focus on:

 

  • Sanitising the governance system
  • Tackling insecurity through effective and accountable use of resources
  • Prioritising education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation
  • Catalysing small businesses as growth engines
  • Combating corruption with unflinching resolve
  • Transforming Nigeria from a consuming nation to a productive one, with agriculture, technology, and manufacturing as anchors

 

“These are not utopian dreams,” Obi stressed. “They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years.”

 

Obi emphasised that rebuilding public trust in governance requires leaders who keep their word, and he intends to be one of them.

 

“I will not spend a day longer than four years in office. Forty-eight months is enough for any focused and prepared leader to make a meaningful difference,” he vowed.

 

The former Anambra governor concluded with his trademark message: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
