Trump suspends HIV funding for Nigeria and other countries

According to The Guardian, the US government’s decision to halt funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has sent shockwaves through global HIV/AIDS programs, with Nigeria being one of the countries heavily impacted.

Since 2003, PEPFAR has invested over $85 billion in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, saving over 17 million lives across 54 countries. The consequences of reduced US support are dire, with experts warning that it could jeopardize the progress made so far in combating the epidemic. Over 1 million women and children in Nigeria are currently receiving life-saving HIV treatment through PEPFAR, and any disruption to this support could put millions of lives at risk. As Nigeria continues to face challenges in taking full ownership of its HIV/AIDS response, the government and international partners must work together to ensure that the progress made so far is not reversed.
