Uncertainty surrounds Rivers House impeachment moves as Assembly fails to reconvene

There are indications that the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, may be considering calls from Colleagues , Stakeholders and the public regarding the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu.

This followed the inability of the House to resume plenary this Thursday, 15 January, 2026, a week after adjourning its last sitting.

The charges include the demolition of the state assembly complex, spending without legislative approval, and other related offences. The House had adjourned until January 15, 2026, to continue the proceedings.

Reports from Port Harcourt about 3pm say the Assembly was not in session and there were no official explanations on the situation.

Since the House initiated the impeachment proceedings four members have made a vote face and withdred from the act while appealing to their colleagues to sheath their swords.

Recall on 8 January 2026, the House initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct and according to reports the duo are yet to get the notices.
