Abia Police Refute Viral Insecurity Claims, Reaffirm Safety in State Capital
The Abia State Police Command has dismissed as misleading a viral video circulating on Facebook which alleges widespread insecurity and official silence in the state capital, insisting that the security situation in Abia remains stable and under control.
In a statement issued on April 1, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, described the claims in the video as inaccurate and not reflective of realities on ground. She reassured residents that the Command has continued to record significant successes in its operations against crime, particularly cultism.
According to the statement, from January to date, the Command has investigated 13 cult-related cases, arrested 23 suspects who have been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody, and recovered 32 arms. Additionally, five other cult-related cases are currently under investigation.
The Command further disclosed that, acting on credible intelligence, it apprehended suspects linked to cult clashes at Isi Gate on March 13 and 18. In a related development, suspected cultists were also arrested at Orji River Street, along Enugu Road in Umuahia, in connection with a shooting incident during a clash.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with efforts intensified to apprehend fleeing members of the groups.
To curb criminal activities, the Police said it has strengthened proactive strategies, including coordinated stop-and-search operations, enhanced patrols across divisions, and deployment of the Anti-Cultism Unit and other tactical teams. Continuous intelligence gathering has also been prioritized.
The Command added that it recently launched the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, targeting schools across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels to address the root causes of cultism.
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state. He urged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear and called for continued public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
