Chibuzo Declares Support for Labour Party, Hints at 2027 Senatorial Bid

A prominent human rights activist, Elder Comrade James Chibuzo Chikwendu, has formally aligned with the Labour Party, expressing satisfaction with the party’s direction and hinting at a possible senatorial bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to newsmen after the Labour Party 2026 Elective National Convention held at the International Conference Center in Umuahia, Chibuzo said his decision to join the party was driven by its alignment with his long-standing activism and commitment to national development.

Chibuzo, who currently serves as the National Vice-President of the Coalition for the Defense of Human Rights in Nigeria, described the Labour Party as a platform that reflects the ideals of activism in the country.

“I have been an activist for years, and in recent times I sought a political platform that aligns with my principles. The Labour Party clearly represents that vision, and I am proud to be part of it,” he said.

The Abia-born politician recalled his political journey, noting that he was the governorship candidate of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) in Abia State in 2011 and later became one of the founding members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.
However, he said the APC did not meet his expectations as an activist.

Chibuzo also commended the interim leadership of the Labour Party for successfully organizing the national convention despite financial and logistical challenges, describing the process as a significant step in strengthening the party’s structure.

He revealed that he participated actively in the party’s congresses at ward, local government, and state levels, where he contested for the position of deputy chairman in Abia State but stepped down in respect of the party’s zoning arrangement.

Emphasizing his commitment to party discipline, he said, “I had to allow party supremacy to prevail.”
Looking ahead, Chibuzo disclosed plans to contest and expressed a broader ambition to run for the Abia South Senatorial seat in 2027.

“It is not healthy for one individual to occupy a position for too long. I believe in fresh ideas and representation that truly reflects the people’s interests,” he added.

In a related development, Chibuzo congratulated Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma on his emergence as the National Secretary of the Labour Party, describing the appointment as well-deserved and a testament to Obioma’s leadership qualities.

He expressed confidence that Obioma’s experience would strengthen the party and advance its ideals nationwide.
