The killing of Hon. Igwe Akuma Akwu, former President-General of the National Association of Ohafia Students (NAOS) and a prominent youth leader, has sent shockwaves across Abia State, with emerging details pointing to a premeditated attack amid a long-running communal crisis in Okon-Aku Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area.

Igwe Akuma was shot dead at close range on Friday night, January 2, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., while returning home with members of his household from a traditional Igba Ekpe retirement visit.

According to multiple community sources, Akuma was in the company of his brothers, Uche Akwu and Acha Akwu, when their group was confronted by armed youths allegedly from the Ndi Owom compound along a disputed route in the community.

Eyewitnesses said a heated confrontation quickly escalated, and gunshots rang out, with Akuma hit directly in the chest, killing him on the spot. Other members of his group reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to their legs, while panic spread across the neighborhood.

Findings reveal that the fatal shooting was the climax of days of violent attacks between Ndi Uma and Ndi Owom compounds, linked to a prolonged and unresolved Ezieogo tussle and disputes over access through a traditional Obu (compound hall) following an Igba Ekpe ceremony held on December 30, 2025.

Between December 30 and 31, Ndi Uma residents allegedly came under coordinated attacks, with homes vandalized and families chased out. Tensions remained high despite appeals for restraint.

In what now appears chillingly prophetic, Igwe Akuma had publicly warned that his life was in danger.

On December 30, 2025, just days before his death, Akuma took to his official Facebook page, raising alarm over escalating violence. He alleged that thugs linked to a disputed Ezieogo installation had beaten him earlier in January 2025, burnt his Toyota Corolla on October 28, 2025, destroyed properties, and issued repeated death threats.

In the same post, he disclosed that a five-year-old cousin went missing during one of the attacks and pleaded for urgent intervention, warning that the crisis could spiral beyond control.

Akuma’s killing has plunged Okon-Aku community into deep mourning, coming barely one week before his scheduled wedding, a tragedy residents described as both heartbreaking and avoidable.

Beyond his role as former NAOS President-General, the deceased was also a former councillorship aspirant in Okamu Ward, widely regarded as a fearless voice for youth inclusion, justice, and peace-building in Ohafia.

Confirming the incident, the Abia State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed that operatives from the Ohafia Divisional Headquarters, led by the DPO and supported by two tactical teams, have been deployed to the area.

She confirmed that some suspects have been arrested and are undergoing interrogation, while security presence has been reinforced to prevent further bloodshed.

As outrage mounts, residents and youth groups are demanding justice, transparency, and decisive action, warning that failure to address the root causes of the crisis could trigger wider communal unrest across Ohafia.
