Nigerians call out Lagos CP over detention of lawyers who took action against land grabbers [VIDEO]

Nigerians have called out the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, and the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, for alleged illegal detention of a group of lawyers who took legal action against land grabbers.

According to a live video shared by one of the lawyers, the police detained them at the command headquarters late into the night after assaulting them.

When one of the officers attempted to stop a female lawyer among them from recording, she was heard saying, “I have to record this for our safety sir. It’s very important that I record it for our safety please, I’m begging you. I’m a lawyer and I know my right. You’re six officers, the law allows me to record.”

Her male colleague was heard saying, “You can’t seize her phone.”

The policeman in the video challenged the male lawyer, saying, “Who are you? Who do you think that you guys are?”

Narrating what transpired, one of the lawyers said, “There’s a petition against your boss Akerele. We are at the command waiting for the CP to come and detain us. Officers that don’t know the law, you don’t read your Police Act. You obviously don’t know that civilians can record you in your line of duty because you people want to be doing criminal activities.

“You unlawfully detained lawyers at your office. This is 11:00 pm. And this officer Gabriel Ibrahim used his gun to hit my face, he almost damaged my face with his rifle. They are threatening to deal with us, and we’re lawyers.

“Only God knows the hope of the common man if we that are lawyers and have been practicing in this country for years can be attacked. They are a police task force. One of the officers said he’s going to kill us and nothing will happen. We’ve been here now waiting, they did not allow us to go.”

Following the viral video, netizens have continued to call out CP Moshood Jimoh over the alleged unlawful operation of Akerele in Lagos State, with many tagging the Nigeria Police Force, IGP and the Force spokesman while sharing the footage.

While calling for CP Moshood Jimoh’s transfer from Lagos, one user @durahtycoon wrote, “The CP and the popularly questioned Mr Akinrele should be transferred to Borno State. The Nigerian police are not your friend.”

opeyemi_creates added, “It’s best they transfer this CP and Akerele cos na only them. Chaii.”

fadojoe_official said, “Who is giving this Lagos Akerele so much guts to oppress citizens like this? In democracy? Not even in military regime can we see this type of lawlessness on the part of law enforcement agents. Law enforcers turn law breakers. So sad for my country.”
